Amazing Antigua
Everything about Antigua is colorful - the Spanish colonial buildings, the skirts and dresses on the women, the gaudy painted buses and I'm TALL here - Amazonian-head-and-shoulders-towering-above people tall!! And they can't even wear heels to compete cos the entire city is cobblestones! This also has the added benefit of slowing the gaudy "chicken" buses as they squeeze past each other threatening to take out towering Amazonian gringas on the pavements designed for teeny tiny Guatemalans..
It's also safer than Guatemala City judging by the speed at which my driver Ligia tore out of there - she only slowed down on the winding mountain pass to show me photos of her favorite local cuisine (plato tipico) on her phone ..(so to add to jetlag I arrive both white-knuckled and starving )..
So Antigua - blindingly bright and picturesque, incredible coffee grown on the surrounding mountains and volcanoes and the best hot chocolate in the world at Cafe Contessa in the Parque National .. Todo Bien!!

Mayan Mayhem
Soooo not such a smart move watching “The Most Dangerous Place in the World to be a Paramedic” before returning to Central America … the strong focus on the gang shootings on buses in Guatemala City promptly heralds a spate of texts from concerned friends (and excited beneficiaries of my will..) … to which I scoff – “idiots - I’m going to Antigua” .. until my travel agent pointed out I actually fly into Guatemala City at night and had a 45 minute BUS TRIP to Antigua … frantically looking into airport transfers now..
Going for a range of travel styles this trip – cross country backpacking from Guatemala through Belize to Mexico then onto New Orleans catching up with Bin. She booked a hotel in the French Quarter with the proviso “it’s probably not flash, but hopefully has heaps of charm. Besides you're a back-packer so anything with doors, electricity and running water is generally fine with you"...
And since my vacation finishes with a crazy wedding in Las Vegas … I now have to pack shorts, bathers and my best sequined-spandex-Elvis-inspired cocktail dress …
Less than three weeks to go … ransom fund reinitiated, rescue team primed, EPIRB sourced … and that’s just for my first night with the girls in Vegas … standby …
