The Uros people live on giant floating man-made Tortora reed islands, almost 2 metres thick, anchored on the waters of Lake Titicaca.
The communities have gardens, schools, hospitals even fish farms and in the case of disputes (including a recent one between the 7th Day Adventists and Catholics) they simply take a bloody big saw and split the island! Brilliant idea!
The locals look great - the men in white embroidered tunics and the women in multiple layers of brightly coloured skirts and bowler hats over their thick braids (as worn here by Rosa, the community president).
Unfortunately, they also encourage visitors to dress up in their traditional garb - the result being much less picturesque and a source of great amusement to the islanders .. and everyone else ..
