Frida's Casa Azul

In today's episode of the Amazing Race, Fiona has four hours to find her way across Mexico City without a map to Frida Kahlo's house armed only with the name of the nearest (give or take 10 blocks) Metro station. She can (and frequently does) ask for directions (which only helped when accompanied by hand gestures and charades as no-one spoke English or even slow Spanish). From there she must use Blanca's Mum's mud map to find Lecaroz Bakery, buy a pollo empanada and pastry, walk across to Coyoctan Plaza, sit (not directly) under the world's largest PiƱata and smugly eat her lunch in the sun.
Casa Azul is an amazing collection of Kahlo's work, life and loves. Decorated with her paintings, photos and personal possessions, it's a must see for anyone going to Mexico City ... just take a map..
On the way back I dropped in to say goodbye to my new friends at Culichi Bichi - they fed me (again) this time it was spicy seafood soup and crab empanada whilst inflicting Andrea Rieu "Live in Australia" on their customers in my honour .. priceless ..

  1. Call me old fashioned if you must. But why didn't you use a GPS?

  2. This from Jstaff today:

    Mass Mexican escape
    20 December 2010

MORE than 150 prisoners escaped from a Mexican prison near the US border last Friday, 17 December.

Investigators said the prisoners left through a service entrance for vehicles at the penitentiary in Nuevo Laredo and were allegedly helped by one of the prison staff.

The prison warden has gone missing since the breakout.

The border region has been gripped by violence and rising lawlessness in recent years as drug cartels have battled over lucrative smuggling routes into the United States.

    WHAT DID YOU DO????????

  3. A GPS would have made me a target ... more of one .. already fronted a bloke in a balaclava in Mexico City at night on my way back to the hotel .. well not so much as fronted more "bolted-into-the-nearest-well-lit- Starbucks .." it WAS very cold but I figure if he was just stopping me for a chat he could follow and we could talk over a frappachino ...hmm maybe he was an escaped prisoner ...
